The United Methodist Church believes that mission is from everywhere to everywhere. We have our feet in our community but mission wings can carry us all the way around the world.
Our Missionaries go were we cannot go. David and Lori Persons serve in the Democratic Republic of Congo in a place called Mulungwishi. David is the dean of the seminary there, where hundreds of pastors have been trained for ministry across Congo. Lori directs the Women’s School. Read their blog and learn more about the life-changing work they are doing in the name of Jesus Christ.
Central also supports Dr. Elma Jocson. Dok Elma is from the Philippines. Most recently she served at United Mission Hospital in Nepal. Currently Elma is home in the Philippines studying pediatric surgery. She will be reassigned somewhere in the world when she finishes this degree in 2009. Read more about how Dok Elma becomes the hands of Christ, the Great Physician.
Faithful Remnant meets at the church twice a month—1st & 3rd Fridays — in the Conference Room. From 10 am to noon, hands keep busy with handicrafts as hearts keep busy with friends. There’s tea, too. The group donates their handicrafts to agencies in the community and around the globe. There’s always room at the table for newcomers
Fair Trade products are sold at Central. These coffees, teas and chocolates offer a cup of justice. Fair Trade is our link to small farmers in South America, Africa and Asia. They receive a better wage and practice more earth-friendly methods because of the “Equal Exchange” partnership. These products are sold at the United Methodist Women Mini-Mart in Parish Hall during Coffee hour at 12:15 pm on Sunday. Read more.
Global Volunteers Every year Central’s youth make a summer mission trip somewhere in the United States. If you are an interested youth or an adult willing to be a chaperone, contact youth director Carol Higginson. Individual volunteers also leave Muskegon for service in far away places. Over the past year, these Volunteers in Mission include: Lisa Arthur, Durban South Africa; Harry & Lori Arthur, Nicaragua; Allison Case, Ukraine; Cheryl, Josiah and Sarah Youngquist, Peru; and Lynn & Kay DeMoss, DR Congo. For more information on becoming a global or national volunteer, contact the Rev. Lynn DeMoss.
